Secara ekonomi, pengangguran akan menjadi beban orang yang bekerja. Dengan begitu, kesejahteraan pihak yang bekerja akan berkurang.
Pengangguran pun menyebabkan terhambatnya pertumbuhan ekonomi yang jika tidak segera ditingkatkan akan menyulitkan adanya pembukaan lapangan kerja, serta penghasilan pajak menurun.
Secara sosial, pengangguran berdampak pada meningkatnya angka kriminalitas yang umumnya terdesak kebutuhan ekonomi. Tindakan kriminalitas yang kerap muncul misalnya, perampokan, penjambretan, kecanduan alkohol, hingga kerawanan sosial lainnya.
